LGBT People Remember Why They Don't Like (The Happy) Mondays

The Bristol Vegan Festival returns in 2013, over the Late Spring Bank Holiday weekend. It's recently been rebranded the VegFest and aims to reach out also to lacto-vegetarians, and meat eaters who have a concern for the encvironment. Large numbers of LGBT people are expected as research suggests our community is more likely to be politically active and environmentally aware than a control sample. The entertainments will have a distinctly early 1990's flavour, with The Farm and 808 State among those bands performing.

More WOrk Needed in Mainstream Media, says Jane Hill

The lesbian magazine DIVA marked its two hundredth issue this week with an anniversary reception dinner in London. Current cover star Jane Hill, a BBC television newscaster, was guest of honour, and told the audience that mainstream broadcasting organisations still had a long way to go in representing minority communities. In particular, the BBC has been found by recent surveys to be lagging behind commercial broadcasters in fair representation, and a long way behind community and internet radio, where much specialist output for LGBT people is available.

THT Outlines Work to Come in Tackling HIV among Gay and Bi Guys

The medical magazine The Lancet reports that new data from official bodies shows that the rate of new HIV infections among men who have sex with men in England and Wales has remained unchanged over the past decade.Sir Nick Partridge, Chief Executive at THT, said: “These findings highlight the real challenges faced by HIV prevention work, which need much greater attention. Spending on safer sex campaigns for gay men has fallen dramatically over the past ten years. Much greater priority needs to be given to HIV prevention by the NHS, Local Government and the gay community.”

France Passes Milestone on Path Towards Equality

The BBC reported on Saturday that France's Chamber of Deputies had overwhelmingly approved proposals which would give same-sex couples the right to marry and to adopt children. The deputies agreed that marriage should now be defined as a union between two people rather than the old interpretation as a union between a man and a woman. Although not the end of the legislative process, the BBC sais that the change in statue was now more or less guaranteed.

Scientists and Humanists to Mark Darwin Day on Feb 12th

It's Darwin Day on February 12th. Gay Humanists and Atheist Groups have joined forces with their counterparits across the globe to mark the event, which commemorates the birthday of evolutionary biologist Charles Darwin. The Humanist tradition was one of the first to recognise LGBT people's contribution to society, and has been an ally for gay and trans activists when dealing with religious extremism. The US based American Humanist Association is campaigning for February 12th to be formally recognised by the government.
