"The Citizen" Satirical Magazine Fights Its Corner For the Right to Satire

It’s often the case that anti-gay groups claim that they just want freedom of speech. But in New Zealand, a small website is finding that anti-gay politicians only want free speech for themselves. The Citizen is a satirical website which mocks political figures of all parties. Now a millionaire is threatening the tiny website with legal action for satirising his opposition to marriage equality. Colin Craig is the leader of the very small New Zealand Conservative Party and is responsible for numerous anti-gay theories, including that gay men are homosexual because of childhood abuse.

Vegan Cakes Brighten City Centre Location

The Bear Pit, also known as St James Barton Underpass in Bristol City Centre, has come to life somewhat recently. Independent and market traders have brightened a previously grey part of the centre. On Friday night, vegan cakes were on sale from Bristol Animal Rights Collectice, to raise monies for their campaigning work. Statistics show that LGBT people are more likely to be vegetarian, vegan or have an interest in animal welfare than the general population.

Lesbian Community Mourns Legendary Organiser, Debra "Teacake"

ShoutOut is sad to report the death from cancer this week of Debra Boyask. She ran the Socialbilty email group for lesbians for many years, handing it over to new organisers only days before she died. She played a key role in bringing women together and welcoming those new to Bristol. She will be greatly missed by many for her kindness, great sense of humour and her cakes, which we hear were fantastic and which we assume led to her nickname "Debra Teacake".

Bookfair Brings Radical "Queer" Movement to West Country

Bristol's Anarchist Bookfayre returned at the weekend, in an all day extravaganza of anti-capitalist and anti-authoritarian politics at the Trinity Centre, close to the Old Market Gay Village. Anarchism is not without its own homophobes, but as a political philosophy it has more claim than most for more than a century of advocating for LGBT and general sexual emancipation. Famous anarchists have included Doctor Alex Comfort, the legendary author of the "Joy of Sex".
